Cosmetic surgeries gets more and more and more common with every passing day in America. Its almost as if everyone has forgotten the “surgery” in plastic surgery. The biggest stars have access to the best surgeons and head up the trend with glamour and stardom, convincing nearly everyone to go into surgery for something or another. Sure everyone can identify with the amazing looks achievable with these surgeries, but no one seems to want to remember the risks involved with operation.
Complications of Seroma
Similar to hematomas in that no patient seems to know what it is, the seroma is a fairly common side effect of many plastic surgeries. Seroma is an awesome topic to inquire your chosen surgeon with. Its compares to the hematoma because it also involves something in the body out of place. Its typically associated with the tummy tuck procedure, and happens so often that the majority of surgeons use a sort of drain during surgery to prevent it.
It occurs when blood leaks from the arteries to somewhere its not meant to be. Nearly no patient will know what a hematoma is if you happen to ask them. This should be proof enough of how blindly we as a population flood towards these surgeries as a quick fix. Sometimes requiring a second surgery to treat the hematoma, this complication is ugly and occurs most often with the face lifts.
Smokers are especially at risk for necrosis because of the effect nicotine has on the skin. This complication can occur with nearly every plastic surgery and is really only avoided effectively by choosing an experienced and confident surgeon. Necrosis is skin cell death after surgical manipulation and can leave patients more self conscious than if they would have skipped on the surgery.
Taking these risks into account makes you much more responsible than most of the potential patients out there. Get educated, drill your surgeon with questions, and do everything necessary to ensure that your cosmetic procedure is comfortable and not at all rushed. There are endless examples of poor plastic surgery, and that doesn’t just include non-ideal results. The thing to keep in mind is that someone is in fact slicing you open and changing up some serious tissue masses, the likelihood of complications is a bit higher than just ordering some makeup or the new p90x.
